Missouri Southern State University Scholarship Awards

Suzanne Corman (graduation 2001)

Girls Night Out scholarship recipient, Suzanne Cornman, will be graduating in May, 2011 with a BS in Health Science and minor in Business and Economics. She is looking forward to beginning her career after graduation at the age of 54. Her dream would be to enter grad school in Perfusion (a Perfusionist operates the heart-lung machine assisting the surgeon during cardiopulmonary bypass). Suzanne has been accepted into a grad school but has not yet determined if funding will allow her to attend.

“I couldn’t’ have made it through without the Girls’ Night Out scholarship….in facing grad school I really understand just how much of a difference the scholarship made”.

Suzanne never went to college; she began with a company early on and accelerated during her tenure. After 23 years at her job, Suzanne’s daughter, Erin, was involved in an accident. As a result Erin was paralyzed, requiring Suzanne to leave her job to stay home and care for her daughter. Her husband did not adjust to this living arrangement and left them. Suzanne was facing supporting herself and daughter and the heap of medical bills. After searching for a job, she found that without a college degree she was facing entry level pay which was just not going to make ends meet. She stepped out on faith and started going to college and applied for scholarships. In her first semester, the scholarship foundation at Missouri Southern State University contacted Suzanne and told her they had a scholarship which she would meet all the criteria. Of course, she was thrilled to accept the Girls’ Night Out scholarship and has continued to receive the scholarship every year without reapplying because she continued to meet the GPA requirements. A year following, her daughter Erin, also began college. They have been going at this together.

“The scholarship really has made a difference …people really underestimate women and what they can accomplish…look out world”.
